Lump on the Neck Vertebrae

The cervical vertebrae form the neck's support, but skin, connective tissue and muscle sit between the bone and your hand. A prominent normal bony contour, muscle tension, cyst, fatty lump or inflamed area may therefore be perceived as a lump on a vertebra. A neck lump can be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary, although this symptom does not identify which condition, if any, is present.

A clinician will compare both sides, assess the skin and nearby muscles, and check neck movement and neurological function. Pain, redness, warmth, rapid change or a firm fixed texture are useful details to report.

Arrange an appointment if the finding is new, remains after an injury settles, grows, or causes ongoing pain. Write down whether it is midline or off-centre and whether posture, turning your head or lifting your shoulders changes it. Avoid trying to push a suspected bony lump back into place.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow, sudden arm or leg weakness, loss of coordination, or severe symptoms after neck trauma. These features guide urgency but cannot diagnose cancer without examination and, when needed, testing.

Ask whether the finding is a normal bony prominence or a separate mass, what tissue appears involved, and whether imaging is appropriate.
