Lump on neck bone: what to know

A bump at the base or side of the neck may be in the skin, a lymph node, a muscle attachment, the thyroid area, or the collarbone region. Recent infection, an irritated skin cyst, or a strained muscle can cause swelling. A lymph node can enlarge while the immune system responds to infection. A neck mass can also be associated with head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary; the location alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether it is tender, mobile under the skin, changing in size, or connected with redness. Record when you first noticed it and whether you have fever, night sweats, unexplained weight change, hoarseness, or swallowing difficulty.

Arrange an appointment with a doctor or ear, nose and throat clinician for a new lump that does not settle or that concerns you. The examination may include feeling the lump and checking the mouth, throat, skin, thyroid, and nearby lymph nodes. Depending on the findings, the clinician may request imaging or a needle sample. Do not squeeze, repeatedly press, or attempt to drain it; these actions can irritate the area and make changes harder to judge.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe pain with marked redness. Contact a clinician promptly if the lump is hard or fixed, continues to enlarge, returns repeatedly, or is accompanied by persistent hoarseness, coughing blood, unexplained weight change, drenching night sweats, or a sore that does not heal.

Ask: Where exactly is the lump located? Does it feel like a lymph node, thyroid tissue, muscle, skin lesion, or bone? What examination or imaging is appropriate? Would a needle sample help? Which changes should prompt earlier contact?
