Lump on the neck above the collarbone

A clinician will check both sides of the neck, the collarbone region, thyroid, throat, mouth, ears, and skin. They may ask about recent infections, dental problems, cough, voice change, swallowing, fever, night sweats, and weight change. Ultrasound, other imaging, blood tests, or a needle sample may be used to identify the structure involved.

If a mass is found without a clear starting site, Cancer of Unknown Primary may be considered during the diagnostic process. If the thyroid is the source, Thyroid Removal Surgery is one possible treatment for selected conditions, not a default response to every lump.

Arrange a medical review for a lump that remains, enlarges, feels hard or fixed, or returns after settling. Note its exact position above the collarbone, when it appeared, and whether it changes with swallowing or movement. Avoid squeezing it or repeatedly checking it throughout the day, which can irritate the area.

Bring prior medical records and mention recent infections, dental work, skin problems, or new symptoms. Ask what test will answer the main uncertainty: whether the lump is a lymph node, thyroid-related, fluid-filled, or another type of mass.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, sudden major swelling, or severe weakness. Seek prompt assessment for a persistent, enlarging, hard, or immobile lump, especially with ongoing hoarseness, cough, fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. These signs affect how quickly you should be seen, not what the lump must be.

Which structure does the lump seem to involve? Would ultrasound be the right first test? If it is a lymph node, what might explain its enlargement? When would imaging, a needle sample, or specialist referral be needed?
