What should you know about lump on back of neck and headache?

The lump may be a swollen lymph node, an irritated skin cyst, a fatty lump, or a tight muscle, but its position, size, tenderness, mobility, and duration matter. A swollen node can occur when the body responds to infection in the scalp, throat, ears, or nearby tissues. Headache may accompany a common cold, sinus inflammation, dehydration, heat exhaustion, or anxiety, but the two symptoms are not automatically connected.

A clinician will ask when each symptom began and check the lump, neck movement, skin, temperature, neurological function, and signs of infection. Do not squeeze or repeatedly press the lump, as this can irritate the area.

Book a medical assessment if the lump is new, persists, grows, feels hard or fixed, or comes with fever, sore throat, scalp changes, or unexplained weight loss. Note its approximate location and whether it changes with illness. Rest, drink fluids, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you and taken according to the label.

Tell the clinician about recent infections, insect bites, injury, new skin products, travel, and medicines. A painful lump with a headache may need a different review from a painless lump found incidentally.

Seek emergency care for a sudden severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, fainting, seizure, weakness, difficulty speaking, repeated vomiting, a new rash with fever, or vision loss. Get prompt help if the lump follows a significant injury or if you have trouble breathing or swallowing.

Ask what the lump feels like on examination, whether it could be a lymph node or skin lesion, how long it should be observed, and which changes need review. Ask whether your headache pattern suggests infection, dehydration, muscle tension, or another cause.
