What should you know about lump next to lymph node in neck?

Neck lymph nodes sit close to muscles, salivary tissue, the thyroid region, skin, and blood vessels. A throat, ear, dental, or skin infection can enlarge one or more nodes. A cyst or lipoma may feel similar from the outside. Lymphoma can involve lymphatic tissue, while thyroid cancer and head and neck cancer can affect nearby structures or lymph nodes. Record whether the swelling appeared during an infection, whether it is tender, and whether it moves under the skin or with swallowing. A clinician may examine the lump and the drainage areas around the head and neck, then choose ultrasound, blood tests, or a fine-needle sample. Avoid trying to drain it or repeatedly checking it.
