What should you know about lump near the neck?

The neck contains chains of lymph nodes, the thyroid gland, salivary glands, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and skin structures. A recent cold, sore throat, ear problem, dental infection, or skin irritation can enlarge a lymph node. Cysts and lipomas can create a separate lump. Lymphoma, thyroid cancer, and head and neck cancer are other possibilities, but a neck lump by itself does not identify any of them.
