What should you know about a lump near the back of your neck?

A back-of-neck lump can arise from an irritated hair follicle, skin cyst, muscle-related swelling, or lymph node. Lymph nodes in this area may enlarge while responding to infection or inflammation of the scalp, ears, or throat. A lump in the neck is a presentation of lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or head and neck cancer in some people, but the lump itself does not determine the diagnosis.

Observe whether it is painful, warm, red, soft, firm, mobile, or attached to deeper tissue. Consider recent scalp irritation, bites, injuries, infections, or dental and throat symptoms. Do not puncture or massage the lump.

Arrange a clinical review if the lump remains, enlarges, repeatedly returns, or has no clear trigger. The clinician may examine your scalp, ears, throat, mouth, and the rest of your neck. If needed, imaging or a needle sample can help distinguish a lymph node from a skin or deeper-tissue problem. Bring a timeline and a list of related symptoms.

Get urgent help for breathing or swallowing difficulty, rapid swelling, severe pain, spreading redness, or fever with marked illness. Seek prompt review for a firm or fixed lump, persistent hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, or a lump that does not improve after an infection settles.
