What should you know about a lump moving in your neck?

Movement can mean a lump is within the skin or soft tissue rather than attached to deeper structures. Cysts, inflamed tissue, and lymph nodes may feel mobile, but mobility does not establish the cause. A neck lump is a presentation of conditions such as infection-related lymph-node swelling, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or head and neck cancer; most clues come from the full examination and its time course.

Describe whether it slides sideways, moves with swallowing, or changes when you turn your head. Note tenderness, warmth, redness, recent sore throat, dental infection, skin irritation, or a new medicine. Avoid manipulating it repeatedly, since pressure can irritate the area.

Book a medical appointment when a mobile lump remains after a recent illness, returns, becomes larger, or has no obvious explanation. The clinician may check the neck, mouth, throat, ears, and thyroid, then decide whether imaging or a needle sample is useful. Write down its location and any related voice, swallowing, or breathing change before the visit.

Get urgent help if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, grows quickly, becomes very painful, or is accompanied by severe illness. Seek prompt review for a firm area, a lump that becomes fixed, persistent hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, or a lump near the collarbone.
