Lump in the Upper Breast

The upper breast extends toward the collarbone and armpit, where normal glandular tissue and lymph nodes can be felt. A cyst, fibroadenoma, irritated muscle, or rib cartilage may create a noticeable area. A breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer, but the location alone cannot tell whether a lump is cancerous or benign.

Compare the area with the other side without repeated squeezing. Note if it is tender, linked to movement, or associated with an armpit swelling, skin change, or nipple change. These details help a clinician decide whether examination or imaging is needed.

Make a note of the exact position, size as you feel it, onset, and any change over time. Book an appointment for a new lump, especially if it remains for more than one cycle or feels unlike the surrounding tissue. Avoid trying to massage, drain, or puncture it.

Arrange prompt assessment for a hard or fixed lump, rapid enlargement, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a new armpit lump. Seek urgent care when the breast is hot and red with fever or you feel acutely unwell. A clinician can also assess a lump that is painful or interfering with arm movement.

Ask whether the lump seems to be in breast tissue, muscle, rib cartilage, or a lymph node. Ask whether imaging is appropriate, what follow-up interval is needed, and which changes should bring you back sooner.
