What should you know about a lump in the neck that moves?

A mobile lump may be a reactive lymph node after an infection, a cyst, a thyroid nodule or another benign tissue change. Movement does not rule cancer in or out. Head and neck cancer can present with a neck mass, while lymphoma may enlarge lymph nodes. A lower-front lump can relate to the thyroid, including thyroid cancer. If testing finds a neck mass without an obvious starting site, the work-up may include consideration of Cancer of Unknown Primary.

Make a note of the lump's location, approximate size, tenderness and how long it has been present. Record whether it moves when you swallow or turn your head, and mention recent dental, throat or skin problems. A clinician may examine your ears, mouth, throat, thyroid and lymph nodes, then decide whether imaging or a needle sample is useful. Avoid trying to pop, drain or repeatedly manipulate it.

Get urgent help if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, or if it grows quickly with severe pain or feeling very unwell. Arrange prompt review when a lump does not settle, keeps enlarging, or occurs with persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, ongoing cough, night sweats, fever or unexplained weight loss.

Ask whether the lump feels like a lymph node, thyroid finding or another structure; whether movement with swallowing changes the assessment; and whether you need imaging or sampling. Clarify the follow-up plan and which changes should be reported sooner.
