What should you know about a lump in the neck that does not move?

A lump may be a swollen lymph node, a thyroid nodule, another benign growth, or a mass related to infection or inflammation. A fixed feel describes how the lump moves against nearby tissue; it does not identify the cause by itself. Head and neck cancer can present with a neck mass, and lymphoma can involve lymph nodes, but many neck lumps have non-cancerous explanations. Thyroid cancer may cause a lump in the lower front of the neck. When a mass is found but its starting point is unclear, a specialist may consider Cancer of Unknown Primary during the assessment.

Arrange an appointment and note when you first noticed the lump, whether it has enlarged, and whether it hurts. Mention recent throat, dental or skin infections, smoking or tobacco exposure, voice change, swallowing difficulty, fever, night sweats or unexplained weight change. Examination may include the mouth, throat, thyroid and lymph-node areas. Depending on the findings, the clinician may request imaging or a needle sample. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage the area.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids, rapidly increasing swelling, or swelling with severe illness. Contact a clinician promptly if the lump remains, becomes larger, or comes with persistent hoarseness, coughing, pain when swallowing, fever, drenching night sweats or unexplained weight loss.

Ask where the lump seems to arise, what features make it movable or fixed, which test is appropriate first, and when results should be reviewed. You can also ask whether a thyroid assessment is needed and what symptoms should trigger earlier contact.
