Lump in neck near the Adam's apple

The Adam's apple is formed by cartilage around the voice box. The thyroid lies lower and toward the front of the neck, while lymph nodes and muscles sit around it. Swelling may follow an infection, arise from a cyst, or involve the thyroid or nearby tissues. A lump in this region can be a presentation of thyroid cancer, head and neck cancer, lymphoma, or cancer of unknown primary, but the position by itself does not identify the cause.

Notice whether the lump rises when you swallow, whether it is centered or off to one side, and whether you have hoarseness, throat discomfort, swallowing difficulty, or tenderness. These details help the clinician focus the examination.

Arrange a review if the swelling remains, becomes larger, feels firm, or has no clear explanation. A clinician may examine the voice box area, throat, thyroid, and neck nodes, then recommend imaging or a sample when appropriate. Do not press firmly over the voice box or try to drain the lump.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow liquids, rapidly increasing swelling, or a sudden change in voice. Prompt review is needed for hoarseness that persists, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, or a lump that continues to enlarge. These features require assessment, not a conclusion about cancer.

Ask whether the swelling is in the thyroid, lymph-node chain, or voice-box region; whether swallowing movement is relevant; and whether an ultrasound or other test is needed. Ask what symptoms should lead you to return sooner.
