What should you know about a lump in the neck for 10 years?

A lump that has stayed the same for a long time may be a cyst, fatty lump, scar, longstanding lymph node, or another benign structure. Duration alone cannot identify the cause. Thyroid cancer presents with a thyroid nodule or neck swelling in some people, and lymphoma presents with enlarged lymph nodes; a ten-year history does not confirm or exclude either condition without knowing the examination and any prior test results.

Consider whether it has truly remained unchanged. Compare old photographs or medical notes if available, and recall whether firmness, mobility, skin appearance, pain, or nearby symptoms have altered. A clinician may review previous scans, examine the thyroid and lymph nodes, and decide whether updated ultrasound or sampling is appropriate.

If the lump has never been assessed, arrange a routine clinical appointment and explain how long it has been present. If it was previously checked, bring the old report and describe any difference since then. Avoid repeated squeezing, and do not assume that a stable lump needs no review if new symptoms have appeared.

Mention voice change, swallowing difficulty, breathing symptoms, persistent fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or new lumps elsewhere. The clinician can determine whether observation, ultrasound, blood tests, other imaging, or a needle sample is suitable. If the thyroid is involved, ask how thyroid removal surgery relates to the findings.

Seek prompt care if a long-standing lump starts growing, becomes hard or fixed, develops skin changes, or is joined by other swollen areas. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow, rapidly increasing swelling, or a sudden voice change. These symptoms have several possible causes, but a new change should be assessed without delay.

Does this lump appear unchanged and benign on examination? Should previous imaging be repeated? Would ultrasound or a needle sample add useful information? Which specific changes should prompt earlier review? Could the thyroid, a lymph node, or a cyst explain its position?
