What should you know about lump in lower leg under skin?

Lumps in the lower leg can involve the skin, fatty layer, muscle covering, or a blood vessel. A tender red bump may accompany a boil or local inflammation. A painless, soft, mobile lump can have a different cause from a hard lump that feels attached to deeper tissue. A lower-leg lump is a presentation of many possible conditions, so its appearance alone cannot establish the diagnosis.

Tell the clinician whether it appeared after sport, a knock, an insect bite, or prolonged pressure. Swelling in the whole calf is different from a discrete lump and may need a separate assessment.

Avoid massaging, piercing, or applying irritating products to the area. Check the skin gently and record whether the lump is changing, painful, warm, or affecting walking. Book an examination for a lump that remains, enlarges, recurs, or feels deep. Depending on the findings, a clinician may recommend observation, ultrasound, or another targeted test.

Get prompt medical help for rapidly increasing pain or swelling, spreading redness, fever, pus, or skin that becomes dark or breaks down. Seek urgent care if the entire calf swells suddenly, the leg becomes unusually warm, or breathing symptoms occur. A fixed, steadily growing, bleeding, or ulcerated lump also deserves timely review.
