What should you know about a lump between the shoulder and neck?

The area may contain a strained or tightened muscle, a fatty lump, an inflamed skin cyst, or a lymph node responding to infection. A lymph node in this region can be associated with head and neck conditions; lymphoma presents with enlarged lymph nodes, but a lump in this area does not by itself establish that diagnosis. Thyroid problems are usually lower and more central, although nearby swelling can make the exact source difficult to identify.

A clinician will consider whether the lump is soft or firm, movable or fixed, tender or painless, and whether it is changing. Examination of the mouth, throat, skin, thyroid area, and nearby lymph-node regions may guide imaging or a needle sample.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the lump is new, persists, grows, feels firm or fixed, or has no clear explanation. Note when you first noticed it, whether movement or pressure changes it, and any recent infection, injury, vaccination, or dental problem. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage it, because that can irritate the tissue and make changes harder to judge.

Depending on the examination, evaluation may include an ultrasound, other imaging, blood tests, or a needle sample. If a thyroid source is suspected, ask how thyroid testing fits the plan; thyroid cancer is one condition doctors may consider when a neck mass is near the thyroid.

Seek prompt medical care for a lump that is rapidly enlarging, associated with trouble breathing or swallowing, or accompanied by a new voice change. Arrange timely review for persistent fever, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, marked fatigue, or several enlarged nodes. These features need assessment because they can have many causes, including infection and cancer.

Could this be a muscle, skin lesion, lymph node, or thyroid-related lump? What features on examination determine whether imaging or a needle sample is needed? Which changes should prompt earlier review? If a thyroid cause is suspected, would thyroid ultrasound or thyroidectomy information be relevant?
