What should you know about a lump at the front of the neck under the chin?

Under-chin swelling commonly involves a lymph node reacting to a throat, mouth, tooth, or skin infection. A blocked or inflamed salivary gland can cause swelling that changes around meals. Cysts and other non-cancerous growths are also possible. A persistent mass can be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary, but a lump under the chin does not establish any of these diagnoses.

The clinician will consider tenderness, mobility, firmness, skin changes, recent infections, dental symptoms, and whether the lump is on one side or both. Examination of the mouth and throat can be especially helpful.

Record when you noticed the lump and whether it changes in size, pain, or firmness. Check for sore throat, mouth ulcers, tooth pain, fever, swallowing difficulty, or dry mouth, and share these details. Arrange an appointment for a lump that does not settle after a recent infection, continues to enlarge, feels fixed, or is accompanied by unexplained weight loss. Avoid squeezing it.

Seek urgent care if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, spreads quickly, causes drooling, or comes with severe pain and fever. Prompt review is needed for persistent hoarseness, bleeding from the mouth, or a non-healing mouth sore.

Ask whether the lump appears to be a lymph node or salivary-gland swelling, whether dental or throat findings could explain it, and whether imaging or a needle sample is appropriate. Ask what time frame is reasonable for follow-up.
