What should you know about lump between jaw and neck?

This region contains lymph nodes, salivary glands, muscles, skin, and the tissues around the throat. Dental infection, a sore throat, an ear problem, or skin inflammation can make a nearby node tender. Salivary-gland swelling may become more noticeable around meals. A neck lump is a common presentation of head and neck cancer, and lymphoma can also present as a lump. Thyroid cancer is more relevant when the swelling extends lower down; cancer of unknown primary is considered in specific clinical situations. A lump alone cannot tell you which explanation applies.

Arrange a medical or dental assessment if the lump persists, returns, enlarges, or is not clearly linked to a short-lived infection. Note whether it hurts, moves, changes with eating, or is associated with tooth pain, mouth sores, swallowing difficulty, or facial weakness. The clinician may inspect the mouth and teeth, feel the salivary glands and neck, and request imaging. A needle sample can sometimes help distinguish inflamed tissue from another type of mass.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling, or severe pain with fever. Arrange prompt review for a lump that is hard, fixed, painless and persistent, or accompanied by unexplained weight loss, night sweats, coughing blood, ongoing hoarseness, or an ulcer in the mouth that does not heal.

Ask whether the lump seems to arise from a lymph node, salivary gland, tooth-related infection, or another structure. Ask whether an ultrasound or sample is appropriate, how food-related changes should be recorded, and which symptoms require faster review.
