What should you know about lump between collar bones?

The hollow above the chest contains lymphatic tissue and lies close to the lower neck and upper chest. A recent infection can enlarge lymph nodes, while a cyst, thyroid-related swelling, or other benign tissue change can create a visible or palpable lump. A persistent mass in the neck or above the collar bone can be a presentation of lymphoma or head and neck cancer. Thyroid cancer and cancer of unknown primary may also be part of a clinician's differential diagnosis. Location raises useful questions, but it does not establish a diagnosis.

Arrange an appointment rather than monitoring a new lump indefinitely. Describe whether it is on the right, left, or central area, how quickly it appeared, and whether it moves when you swallow or breathe. Mention recent infections, dental symptoms, skin changes, cough, voice changes, or swallowing problems. A clinician may examine the neck, throat, and upper chest, then use ultrasound or another scan. A needle sample may help identify the type of tissue when examination alone is not enough.

Seek urgent help if the swelling makes breathing or swallowing difficult, appears to enlarge quickly, or is accompanied by severe illness. Request prompt review if it is firm, fixed, painless and persistent, or linked with ongoing fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, cough, or a lasting voice change. Do not puncture, squeeze, or apply strong pressure to it.

Ask which structure appears involved, whether the position changes the choice of imaging, and whether a sample is needed. Ask how soon results will be discussed and which changes require earlier contact. Bring a list of medicines and the date you first noticed the swelling.
