What should you know about lump between breasts sternum?

The sternum is the flat bone at the front of the chest. A bump in this area may be a skin cyst, an inflamed follicle, a small fatty lump, or a prominence of cartilage where a rib joins the breastbone. Tight clothing, friction, injury, or upper-body strain can make nearby tissues tender.

A lump that sits within breast tissue may feel different from one directly on the midline. Breast cancer can present as a lump, but a midline position does not establish that diagnosis. The exact layer and movement of the lump are useful clues for an examination.

Note its position, size in everyday terms, tenderness, skin appearance, and whether it moves when you change posture or tense your chest. Avoid repeatedly prodding it, which can increase soreness. Arrange a routine clinical review if it does not settle, becomes firmer or larger, or remains unexplained.

Bring information about recent knocks, exercise, skin irritation, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and medicines. A clinician may examine the skin, breasts, ribs, and sternum and decide whether imaging is useful.

Seek prompt care if the lump is rapidly enlarging, hot and red, associated with fever, or accompanied by drainage. Arrange urgent help for chest pressure or severe pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. A new breast or skin change with nipple discharge also deserves timely assessment.

Ask: Is the lump in skin, soft tissue, cartilage, bone, or breast tissue? Does its movement or tenderness suggest a chest-wall cause? Would an ultrasound or another test help? Which symptoms should prompt earlier review?
