What should you know about lump beside neck?

Lumps along the side of the neck can appear when lymph nodes respond to a throat, ear, dental, or skin infection. They can also arise from a salivary gland, a cyst, fatty tissue, or another local change. A neck lump is a common presentation of lymphoma and can occur with head and neck cancer; thyroid cancer may be relevant when the swelling is lower or nearer the thyroid. Cancer of unknown primary is considered when a metastatic lump is found without an obvious starting site. A lump does not identify its cause by itself.

Book an appointment if the lump does not settle, becomes larger, or feels hard or attached to deeper tissue. Tell the clinician about recent infections, dental work, smoking or tobacco exposure, medicines, and any changes in hearing, swallowing, speech, or skin. The assessment may include inspection of the ears, mouth, and throat, gentle examination of the neck, and targeted imaging. A needle sample may be recommended when the findings need clarification. Keep a brief record rather than checking it repeatedly.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, sudden difficulty swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, or swelling with faintness. Seek prompt medical review for persistent hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fever that continues, coughing blood, or pain spreading to the ear. New redness, warmth, or severe tenderness may point to infection and also needs timely attention.

Ask whether the lump feels like a lymph node, where it may have originated, and whether nearby areas need examination. Ask what test is being considered, what the result could change, and which symptoms or time course should bring you back sooner.
