What should you know about lump below the neck?

The exact position matters. A swelling at the lower front of the neck may involve the thyroid or nearby soft tissue, while a lump toward the side may be a lymph node. Recent throat, dental, skin, or chest infections can make lymph nodes enlarge. Some lumps are cysts or other non-cancerous growths. A persistent or enlarging mass can also be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary. These diagnoses cannot be made by touch alone.

Arrange a clinical assessment, especially if the lump remains after an infection settles, feels firm, is fixed, or continues to grow. Note when it appeared, whether it changes with swallowing, and whether you have pain, fever, voice change, cough, or difficulty swallowing. A clinician may inspect your mouth and throat, feel the neck and nearby areas, and decide whether imaging, blood tests, or a needle sample is appropriate. Do not squeeze or repeatedly press the area.

Seek urgent medical help if swelling is affecting breathing or swallowing, or if you develop rapidly increasing swelling, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange prompt evaluation for a lump with unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, persistent fever, coughing blood, or a lasting change in voice. A change in size or texture should also be reported.

Ask what structure the lump seems to involve, which features make observation reasonable, and what changes should trigger a return visit. You can also ask whether an ultrasound or needle sample is needed, when results are expected, and what treatment would depend on the findings.
