Lump behind the head near the neck: what to know

This broad area contains the scalp, muscles, skin, connective tissue, and lymph nodes. A recent scalp irritation, skin infection, ear problem, or throat infection may make a nearby node noticeable. A cyst or other non-cancerous soft-tissue growth can feel similar from the outside. Pain from a strained muscle may occur nearby, but a clear lump should still be described separately.

Lymphoma and head and neck cancer are among the conditions that can present with a neck lump. That does not mean a lump near the neck is cancer. Examination findings and, if needed, imaging or tissue testing are used to distinguish possible causes.

Make a brief note of the date found, exact position, tenderness, texture, movement, and any change. Check for recent illness or a visible scalp or skin problem, but do not pick, squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly massage the lump. Book an appointment if it does not settle, becomes larger, feels firm or fixed, or has no clear explanation. A clinician can examine the surrounding areas and decide whether monitoring or further evaluation is suitable.

Seek prompt care for a lump that continues to enlarge or is accompanied by ongoing fever, drenching night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. Go for urgent help if you develop breathing or swallowing difficulty, severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, or sudden substantial swelling. These are escalation signs, not a cancer diagnosis.

Ask: Which nearby structure seems involved? Could a recent scalp, ear, or throat problem explain it? Would imaging help? What change in size, pain, or associated symptoms should prompt an earlier review?
