Lump back of neck on the right side: what to know

One-sided location can help a clinician map the lymph nodes and other structures involved, but it does not reveal the cause. A node may swell near an infection on the scalp, ear, throat, or skin. A cyst or another soft-tissue lump may sit in the same region. Compare sides gently without repeated pressing, and note whether the lump is tender, mobile, smooth, firm, or attached to deeper tissue.

Lymphoma and head and neck cancer can present with a neck lump. Thyroid conditions can also be relevant when a swelling is lower in the neck. These possibilities require examination and, when appropriate, testing; a right-sided lump is not proof of any one condition.

Record when you noticed the lump and whether it changes after a recent illness. Avoid squeezing, piercing, or repeatedly checking it, since this can irritate the skin and make tenderness harder to interpret. Make a routine appointment when it persists, enlarges, recurs, or has no obvious explanation. Bring a list of recent infections, medicines, dental symptoms, skin changes, and other new symptoms.

Seek prompt medical review for a hard or fixed lump, rapid enlargement, persistent fever, drenching night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. Get urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, marked neck swelling, severe pain, or redness spreading from the area. The warning signs determine urgency; the side of the neck does not determine whether a lump is cancerous.

Ask what structure the lump may involve, whether the opposite side feels different, whether an ultrasound or other investigation is appropriate, and which changes should lead you to return sooner.
