What should you know about a lump at the top of the neck under the chin?

The area under the chin includes submental and submandibular lymph nodes, salivary glands, skin, muscles, and tissues near the mouth and throat. Tooth, gum, mouth, throat, or skin infections can enlarge nearby nodes. Salivary-gland swelling may be linked with meals or dryness, while a cyst may sit closer to the skin. Head and neck cancer and lymphoma can present with neck swelling, but an under-chin lump is not proof of either condition. The pattern of symptoms and the examination determine the next step.

Arrange an assessment if the lump persists, enlarges, feels hard or fixed, or returns. Note dental pain, gum changes, mouth sores, sore throat, fever, meal-related swelling, skin redness, tenderness, and when the lump began. A clinician may inspect the mouth and teeth, feel the salivary glands and lymph nodes, and examine the throat. If needed, ultrasound or a needle sample can help distinguish fluid, gland tissue, and a solid mass. Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly press the area.

Seek urgent medical care if swelling interferes with breathing, swallowing, or opening the mouth, or if rapid enlargement occurs with severe pain and fever. Seek timely review for a persistent, hard, fixed, or growing lump, or for unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, coughing blood, or a lasting voice change. These features set the need for review; they do not tell you the diagnosis without examination.

Ask whether the lump is closer to a lymph node, salivary gland, tooth-related area, skin, or deeper tissue. Ask whether a dental or throat examination is needed, when imaging would help, how soon follow-up should occur, and which symptoms require faster care.
