What should you know about lumbar vertebroplasty?

A clinician uses imaging to guide a needle through the back into the affected vertebra, then places [Bone Cement](/materials/bone-cement/) inside the collapsed or weakened bone. The cement hardens within the vertebral body. The procedure is aimed at a suitable source of pain, such as a painful [Vertebral Compression Fracture](/conditions/vertebral-compression-fracture/), and does not repair every cause of lumbar pain or treat nerve compression by itself. Candidacy depends on imaging, symptoms, fracture age, bone health, and general medical condition.

Before treatment, provide a full medication list and mention blood thinners, allergies, infection, fever, bleeding problems, and previous spine procedures. Ask what preparation, anaesthesia, monitoring, and activity restrictions apply.
