What should you know about Ludwig angina treatment?

Ludwig’s angina is a spreading infection in the floor of the mouth and tissues under the jaw. Swelling may narrow the airway, so clinicians assess breathing early and involve specialists when needed. Treatment can include oxygen, intravenous antibiotics, fluids, pain relief, airway support and surgical drainage of pus or infected tissue. A dental source may need treatment after the immediate danger is controlled.

This is different from angina pectoris, which is heart-related chest discomfort. Cardiac symptoms may be evaluated with an Electrocardiogram and treated with cardiovascular medicines rather than antibiotics or neck drainage.

Go to emergency care for swelling beneath the tongue or jaw, drooling, trouble swallowing, a muffled voice, fever or worsening neck pain. Keep yourself upright if that makes breathing easier, avoid food and drink if swallowing is unsafe, and do not press, puncture or massage the swelling. Tell clinicians about dental problems, allergies and medicines.

If your concern is heart-related angina, stop exertion and follow the plan prescribed for you. Continue Blood Pressure Medication or Statin Therapy as directed unless a clinician advises otherwise.

Breathing difficulty, noisy breathing, blue or grey lips, inability to swallow saliva, confusion or rapidly enlarging mouth or neck swelling require emergency services immediately. Do not drive yourself if breathing is threatened or you feel faint.

Ask what caused the infection, how the airway is being monitored, which antibiotic plan is intended, whether drainage or dental treatment is required, how pain and nutrition will be managed, and which symptoms mean you should return urgently.
