What should you know about LTBI tuberculosis?

Short answer

Latent tuberculosis infection means TB germs are present in the body but are inactive, so you do not have active TB disease or spread it to others.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Spread
LTBI is not contagious.
Assessment
Symptoms and chest imaging help distinguish latent from active TB.
Treatment
Preventive medicine may be offered after clinical review.

What LTBI means

A positive TB skin or blood test can show that your immune system has encountered TB germs. It does not by itself show whether infection is latent or active. Clinicians review symptoms, medical history, exposure, immune status and tests such as a chest X-ray. Active tuberculosis can affect the lungs or other organs and may cause cough, fever, night sweats or swollen glands; a person with LTBI generally has no symptoms.

LTBI can become active later, particularly when the immune system is weakened. HIV infection is one factor clinicians consider. A diagnosis is not the same as contagious disease, but it deserves follow-up.

What to do next

Arrange a clinical assessment after a positive screening result. Your clinician may recommend preventive medicine to lower the chance of active TB, taking account of other medicines, liver health, pregnancy and possible drug interactions. Take treatment exactly as prescribed and report yellowing of the skin, severe nausea, unusual abdominal pain, dark urine, vision changes or a widespread rash promptly. Do not stop or restart treatment without advice.

Keep appointments for symptom review and any blood tests your clinician requests. Read about Tuberculosis Screening and Chest X-Ray to understand the assessment.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for coughing blood, severe breathing difficulty, confusion, or rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent cough, fever, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss or swollen glands, because these symptoms need assessment for active TB or another condition.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which test was positive, whether active TB has been excluded, whether you need a chest X-ray, which preventive regimen fits your health history, what monitoring is needed, and what symptoms should trigger a same-day call.

Questions people ask

Can latent TB make me feel unwell?

LTBI usually has no symptoms. New cough, fever or night sweats should be assessed rather than assumed to be latent infection.

Can I pass LTBI to my family?

Latent infection is not spread through ordinary contact. Active TB requires separate medical assessment and infection-control advice.
