Lower throat itchy cough: what to know

A Common Cold can irritate the throat and cause a cough with a blocked or runny nose. Allergic Rhinitis may cause an itchy throat, sneezing, and mucus draining from the nose. Acid Reflux can irritate the throat, particularly after meals or when lying down. Acute Bronchitis may follow a viral illness and bring a deeper cough. Asthma can cause cough, chest tightness, wheeze, or symptoms triggered by exercise or allergens. Chronic Cough needs review when it persists. Bronchiectasis may produce a long-term cough with phlegm. Bronchiolitis is mainly a concern in infants and young children.

Drink warm fluids, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use a humidified environment if dry air worsens irritation. Honey may soothe a cough for adults and children over one year, but never give it to an infant. Saline nasal rinsing can help if nasal drainage is present. If reflux seems linked, avoid lying down soon after eating and discuss recurring symptoms with a clinician. Do not start antibiotics without assessment, because many coughs are not bacterial.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, blue lips, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, or severe swelling of the throat. Arrange medical review for wheezing, high fever, dehydration, a cough that is worsening, or symptoms that persist. Infants with fast breathing, poor feeding, or unusual sleepiness need prompt assessment.
