What should you know about a lower neck lump?

The lower neck contains lymph nodes, the thyroid gland, muscles, blood vessels, and other soft tissues. A lump may be tender and appear during a throat or skin infection, or it may be painless and persist after other symptoms settle. A thyroid lump often moves when you swallow, although this feature alone cannot identify its cause. Cancer of the thyroid, lymphatic system, or head and neck can also present as a neck mass, but many neck lumps have non-cancerous explanations. A clinician will consider your age, medical history, smoking or alcohol exposure, recent infection, and the lump's position, firmness, mobility, and duration.

Arrange a medical assessment if the lump does not settle, keeps enlarging, feels hard or fixed, or returns. Examination may include looking at your mouth and throat, feeling the neck and thyroid, and checking nearby lymph-node groups. Depending on the findings, a clinician may request an ultrasound, blood tests, imaging, or a needle sample. Do not repeatedly squeeze the area because this can irritate tissue and make changes harder to judge. Keep a note of when it began, whether it changes with swallowing, and any fever, sore throat, hoarseness, weight change, or night sweating.

Seek urgent care if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, or if it grows quickly with severe pain, redness, or fever. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent painless lump, unexplained hoarseness, coughing blood, trouble swallowing, drenching night sweats, or an unexplained loss of weight. These warning signs do not identify a diagnosis, but they help determine how quickly examination and testing should occur.
