Lower Back Spasms When Sitting

Short answer
Lower back spasm during sitting may come from sustained muscle loading or a sensitised back; vary your position, take movement breaks, and seek help for nerve or bladder changes.

How sitting can contribute
Sitting keeps the hips and spine in one position, especially during driving, desk work, or studying. Slouching is not the only issue: even an upright position can become uncomfortable when held for too long. Muscles may tighten to protect an irritated area, and the symptom can occur with Muscle Strain or non-specific low back pain. Facet Joint Syndrome and Herniated Disc are among the conditions a clinician may consider, but sitting-related spasm alone cannot identify one.
Change the sitting pattern
Set the chair so your feet are supported and your hips are level with or slightly higher than your knees. Keep frequently used items close, and change position before stiffness becomes intense. Stand, walk briefly, or perform gentle hip movements during regular pauses. For driving, adjust the seat so you are not reaching for the pedals or steering wheel. Use heat if it feels soothing and avoid aggressive stretching into pain. A physiotherapist can review your workstation, sitting tolerance, and strength; Myofascial Release or Dry Needling may be considered when clinically appropriate.
Know when to get help
Obtain urgent care for new leg weakness, numbness around the groin, or difficulty controlling urine or stool. Seek prompt assessment when severe pain follows trauma or fever accompanies back pain. Make a routine appointment if sitting tolerance steadily falls, pain travels down a leg, or symptoms persist despite regular position changes.
Points to raise
Ask whether your chair, vehicle setup, or work pattern needs adjustment and which exercises are safe during a flare. Record how quickly sitting brings on the spasm, whether standing eases it, and any tingling or numbness in the legs.

Questions people ask
Is poor posture the only reason sitting causes spasm?
No. Duration, muscle fatigue, joint irritation, and other back problems can all affect symptoms; posture is only one factor.
Can a standing desk solve the problem?
Standing may help some people, but staying in one position can also irritate the back. Alternate comfortably and adjust the setup gradually.
