Low-viscosity bone cement

Bone cement is mixed during a procedure and changes from a workable liquid-like material into a firm fixation medium. Low viscosity means it can flow into small spaces before it sets, which may help a surgeon fill a prepared area or stabilise a weakened vertebra. It is not a glue for every fracture and it does not restore bone biology. Depending on the operation, it may be used in joint replacement or in procedures such as kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty. The choice depends on bone quality, anatomy and the surgical plan.

Ask your surgical team why cement is being considered, what other fixation options exist and how it changes the planned procedure. Share allergies, previous reactions to bone cement, heart or lung conditions, kidney problems and every medicine or supplement you take. Follow fasting, medication and mobility instructions from the hospital. After surgery, follow the wound and weight-bearing plan; do not judge recovery by pain alone, because the treated bone or joint still needs time to settle.

After a procedure, seek urgent help for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, new confusion or severe weakness. Contact the surgical team for fever, increasing wound redness or drainage, escalating pain, new limb weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control after spine treatment. New calf swelling or severe pain also needs prompt medical assessment.

Ask which cemented technique is planned, what it is intended to achieve, and how cement compares with another fixation method for your bone quality. Ask about activity limits, warning signs and the expected follow-up after the operation.
