What should you know about low renin hypertension?

Renin is a kidney-related hormone involved in salt balance, blood volume and blood-pressure control. A low result can occur in several settings, including salt-sensitive hypertension, ageing, kidney-related changes or hormone conditions. The result alone does not identify one cause.

Some blood-pressure medicines, diuretics, salt intake, posture and the timing of the blood test can alter renin. Your clinician may review potassium, kidney function and another hormone called aldosterone. Hypertension may have no obvious symptoms, while long-term uncontrolled pressure can damage blood vessels and organs.

Do not stop blood-pressure medicine before testing unless the prescriber gives a plan. Bring every prescription, supplement and non-prescription medicine to the appointment. Management may involve adjusting treatment, checking for a secondary cause and supporting a heart-healthy eating, activity, sleep and weight routine.

Keep a home blood-pressure record if advised, using the same arm and a settled position. Conditions such as Chronic Kidney Disease, Obesity and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea can affect blood-pressure control and may need attention. Treatment aims to lower pressure safely over time.

Call emergency services for chest pain that may be Angina, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, sudden weakness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking or sudden vision change. These may signal a heart or brain emergency, including Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack symptoms.
