Low oestradiol

Oestradiol is a form of oestrogen made mainly by the ovaries before menopause. Levels naturally vary across the menstrual cycle, so a single blood result needs to be interpreted with the timing of the test and your symptoms. Lower oestradiol may be seen around menopause, after the ovaries stop functioning normally, with some medicines, or when the brain's hormone signals are reduced.

Possible effects include hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, discomfort with sex, sleep changes, mood changes, and less predictable or absent periods. These symptoms can have other causes, and low oestradiol is not diagnosed from symptoms alone.

Share the test result with a clinician who knows your menstrual history, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, medicines, and relevant medical conditions. They may decide whether repeat testing or other hormone tests would clarify the picture. Keep a record of bleeding changes, hot flushes, sleep disruption, vaginal symptoms, and the date of any test.

Treatment depends on the cause and the symptoms you want to address. Menopausal symptoms may prompt a discussion of hormone replacement therapy, while vaginal dryness or discomfort may be managed with local options such as vaginal oestrogen therapy. Do not start, stop, or change hormones without medical guidance.

Arrange an appointment if periods stop unexpectedly, become markedly irregular, or are accompanied by hot flushes, vaginal symptoms, or fertility concerns. Earlier assessment is sensible when low oestradiol is possible before the usual menopause transition, because the cause and longer-term care may differ.

Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding with dizziness or weakness, severe pelvic pain, fainting, chest pain, or sudden breathlessness. Those symptoms need prompt assessment rather than being attributed to a hormone result.

Ask what the result means for the day of your cycle, whether your symptoms fit a low-oestrogen state, what other explanations should be considered, and whether follow-up testing is needed.
