Low-fibre diet for diverticulitis: what to know

How the structures involved in Diverticular Disease differ from normal

Short answer

A low-fibre diet may be advised briefly during diverticulitis symptoms, with fluids and medical guidance followed by gradual fibre reintroduction.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why fibre advice can change

Diverticulitis is inflammation involving small pouches in the bowel. During an active episode, a clinician may suggest simpler, lower-fibre foods if eating increases pain, bloating, or bowel activity. This is different from long-term advice for diverticular disease, when fibre may be useful for bowel regularity. The right plan depends on symptom severity, examination findings, hydration, and whether another problem could be causing the abdominal pain.

Using the plan

Follow the specific instructions from your GP or treating team. Choose foods that are easy for you to tolerate, such as smooth soups, yoghurt, eggs, tender protein, and refined grains if these fit your advice. Drink regularly unless you have been told to restrict fluids. Avoid suddenly adding bran, large portions of raw vegetables, or other high-fibre foods while pain is active. As symptoms settle, ask when to reintroduce fibre and increase it in small stages. Nutrition Counselling can help if the plan feels restrictive or you have another dietary need.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for severe or steadily worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, inability to keep fluids down, or blood in the stool. Fever with marked illness, inability to pass stool or gas, or new pain after starting treatment also needs prompt assessment. Do not manage suspected diverticulitis with diet alone when symptoms are significant.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how long the low-fibre phase should last, which foods and fluids suit your situation, what improvement should look like, and how to return to a broader diet. Ask whether constipation, medication effects, or another cause of abdominal pain needs attention.

Questions people ask

Is a low-fibre diet a permanent plan?

Usually it is considered a short-term approach during selected symptoms, not a lifelong replacement for balanced eating.

Can I treat diverticulitis with diet alone?

No. Significant pain or illness needs clinical assessment because treatment depends on severity and the actual cause.
