What should you know about low dose lung cancer screening?

How the structures involved in Lung Cancer differ from normal

Short answer

Low-dose lung cancer screening uses a low-radiation CT scan to look for lung changes before symptoms develop, followed by review of any finding.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How screening works

A low-dose CT creates detailed images of the lungs while you lie still and briefly hold your breath. Screening is intended for people whose risk profile makes early detection worthwhile; a clinician considers factors such as age, smoking history, previous lung disease, and local programme criteria. A scan can show a nodule or other change that is not cancer. An abnormal result usually leads to comparison with earlier images, repeat imaging, or another test rather than an immediate diagnosis.

Planning the next step

Tell the imaging team about pregnancy, implanted devices, prior scans, and any current symptoms. Ask how results will be communicated and who will coordinate follow-up. If a nodule needs investigation, the plan may involve a respiratory specialist, sampling, or genomic tumour profiling if cancer is confirmed. Screening does not replace assessment of symptoms such as a persistent hoarse voice, coughing blood, chest pain, or unexplained breathlessness.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical care for coughing blood, severe or new breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or a rapidly worsening cough. These symptoms need clinical assessment even if a previous screening scan was reassuring. Contact the screening service if you cannot attend a planned scan or if you have not received the result within the agreed timeframe.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether you meet the local screening criteria, what the scan can and cannot detect, and what happens if a nodule is found. Discuss how often follow-up imaging might be needed, how smoking cessation support fits into care, and which symptoms should lead you to seek help before the next scan.

Questions people ask

Can a screening scan diagnose lung cancer by itself?

No. A scan can identify a suspicious change, but diagnosis may require follow-up imaging, sampling, and specialist review.

Should I wait for screening if I have symptoms?

No. New or concerning symptoms need clinical assessment rather than waiting for a routine screening appointment.
