Low CSD melanoma: what to know

CSD means cumulative sun damage. Low CSD melanoma is a descriptive subtype, often considered in areas such as the palms, soles, nails, or less chronically sun-exposed skin. The label does not by itself tell you how advanced the cancer is. A pathology report may describe depth, ulceration, margins, and other cell features. Melanoma can begin in an existing mole or as a new changing mark, so the original skin appearance is not enough to determine risk.

Diagnosis usually involves examining the lesion and removing a sample or the whole suspicious area for laboratory review. Depending on the report, care may include Surgical Excision or Skin Cancer Surgery, with a wider margin around the original site. Some people are offered Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy to help assess spread beyond the primary lesion. More advanced disease may lead to discussion of Immunotherapy or Tumour Removal Surgery. Your team bases this on pathology and imaging rather than the subtype name alone.

Request prompt assessment for a mark that changes in size, shape, colour, or sensation, develops bleeding or crusting, or differs from your other moles. After diagnosis, new headaches, weakness, seizures, confusion, or vision changes need urgent medical attention because they can have many causes but require prompt assessment in someone with melanoma. Follow-up after treatment helps clinicians check the treated area, nearby skin, and lymph nodes.

Ask what the pathology report says about depth and margins, whether further excision or nodal assessment is advised, which scans are appropriate, and how often you need skin and lymph-node checks.
