Low Cervix Pain During Sex

Deep pain may be related to pelvic inflammation, endometriosis, an ovarian endometrioma or another ovarian problem. Pain at the entrance can instead reflect dryness, skin irritation, pelvic floor muscle tightening or vulvodynia. Around and after menopause, reduced oestrogen can make vaginal tissues drier and more fragile. The position, depth and timing of pain can help a clinician distinguish these patterns.

Pause penetration when pain starts and discuss depth, position and pace with your partner. A water-based lubricant may reduce friction; avoid fragranced washes and products that sting. Keep a brief record of cycle timing, bleeding, discharge, urinary symptoms and where the pain occurs. A clinician may offer a pelvic examination, infection testing or imaging, depending on the pattern.

Arrange prompt assessment for new or persistent pain, bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, fever, pelvic tenderness or pain with urination. Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, faintness, heavy bleeding, vomiting or possible pregnancy with one-sided pain. Pelvic inflammatory disease can require timely treatment.

Ask whether the pain seems superficial or deep, whether infection or endometriosis should be considered, and whether an examination or ultrasound is appropriate. Tell the clinician what positions trigger pain and whether it occurs outside sex.
