Short answer

Loud snoring solutions start with improving nasal airflow, changing sleep habits, and checking for obstructive sleep apnoea.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What loud snoring can mean

Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the nose, mouth or throat vibrate as air moves during sleep. A blocked nose from Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis can make the sound louder. Sleeping on your back, alcohol near bedtime, smoking and excess weight may also narrow the airway. Loud, frequent snoring with pauses in breathing, gasping, morning headaches or marked daytime sleepiness can be a presentation of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Snoring alone cannot establish that diagnosis.

Steps that may help

Try sleeping on your side, keeping a regular sleep schedule and avoiding alcohol close to bedtime. Treat a stuffy nose only with advice suited to its cause; a clinician or pharmacist can help you choose safely. Do not rely on untested gadgets, and do not stop prescribed medicines without guidance. If weight is contributing, a structured Weight Management Programme may be one part of care. Ask a clinician about a sleep assessment if the snoring is persistent, disruptive or accompanied by breathing pauses. A partner’s description or a short sleep diary can make the appointment more useful.

When to seek care

Arrange medical review when someone notices repeated breathing pauses, choking or gasping during sleep, or when sleepiness affects driving, work or safety. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake, chest pain, fainting or confusion. A clinician may examine the nose and throat and arrange sleep monitoring; the result guides treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Could nasal allergy or sinus disease be contributing? Do my symptoms suggest a sleep study? Which changes are safe with my medicines? What should my partner record overnight?

Questions people ask

Can changing sleep position reduce snoring?

Side sleeping can reduce airway narrowing for some people, although persistent loud snoring still deserves review.

Is loud snoring always sleep apnoea?

No. Snoring has several possible contributors, but pauses, gasping and daytime sleepiness are reasons to seek assessment.
