Short answer

There is no reliable fixed day for taste loss during COVID-19; it may begin at different points or not occur.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Fixed timing
No single day reliably predicts taste loss.
Record
Note onset alongside smell and respiratory symptoms.
Safety
Urgent breathing or neurological symptoms need prompt help.

Why timing varies

People experience COVID-19 differently. Taste change may accompany early respiratory symptoms, appear while other symptoms are developing, or be noticed later as eating returns to normal. Some people do not lose taste at all. Smell change, nasal congestion, dry mouth, and reduced appetite can make the timing difficult to judge. A cold and other causes can create a similar pattern. The day a symptom starts cannot confirm infection or predict how the illness will progress.

How to respond

Write down the date and approximate time you first noticed the change, along with smell, fever, cough, sore throat, and breathing symptoms. Follow current local advice about testing and limiting contact when infection is possible. Drink regularly and choose safe foods with useful textures while flavour is altered. Check food freshness by dates and labels rather than smell alone. Keep taking prescribed treatment unless a clinician tells you otherwise.

When to seek help

Get urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, chest pressure, confusion, inability to stay awake, or blue or grey lips or skin. Ask for clinical advice if you cannot maintain fluids, symptoms are worsening, or taste and smell remain changed after the acute illness. A sudden isolated change, or one following head injury, also warrants assessment rather than waiting for a particular day.

Questions to ask

Does the timing of my taste change alter what testing I need? Could congestion or medicine be contributing? How should I monitor hydration and breathing? When should lingering loss be reviewed?
