Loss of smell and taste with allergies

Allergic rhinitis can cause sneezing, an itchy or runny nose, and swelling inside the nasal passages. That swelling limits odours reaching the smell-sensing area, so meals may seem bland even though the tongue still detects basic tastes. Symptoms often vary with exposure to dust, pollen, mould, pets, or other triggers. Chronic sinusitis, a common cold, COVID-19, and Long COVID can produce overlapping changes, so allergy symptoms alone do not prove the cause.

Notice possible triggers and reduce exposure where practical, such as keeping bedroom surfaces clean and closing windows during high-pollen periods. Saline spray or a rinse may clear irritants if used correctly. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an antihistamine or nasal treatment that suits your health history; use sprays exactly as directed and avoid prolonged self-treatment with decongestant sprays. Keep food safe by checking expiry dates rather than relying on smell.

Arrange medical advice if smell or taste does not improve when nasal allergy symptoms are controlled, keeps returning without a clear trigger, or is accompanied by facial pain, fever, thick discharge, bleeding, or one-sided blockage. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, confusion, severe headache, weakness, or sudden loss of smell without congestion.

Ask whether your symptoms fit allergic rhinitis or suggest chronic sinusitis, infection, or another cause. Ask which nasal treatment is appropriate, how long to try it, and whether allergy testing or smell assessment would help.
