Short answer

Prozac can reduce appetite in some people, especially after starting or changing the dose, and persistent loss needs medical review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Medicine
Prozac is fluoxetine.
Possible effect
Reduced appetite or nausea can occur.
Do not
Stop or change the dose without advice.

Can Prozac cause loss of appetite?

Prozac is the brand name for fluoxetine, a medicine used for depression and several other mental health conditions. Reduced appetite, nausea, or a change in taste can occur while your body adjusts. The symptom may also come from depression, an infection, stomach irritation, or another medicine, so the timing alone cannot prove the cause.

What the appetite change may mean

A mild appetite change soon after Prozac is started may settle as treatment continues, but it should still be mentioned at a planned review. Pay attention to nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, low mood, anxiety, and any unintentional weight change. Depression itself can alter eating patterns, while conditions such as gastritis, gastroenteritis, influenza, or COVID-19 may also reduce interest in food.

Appetite loss is a symptom, not a diagnosis. If it continues, worsens, or makes it hard to drink and eat enough, a clinician can review your dose, other medicines, mental health symptoms, and possible physical causes. Do not assume that stopping Prozac will solve the problem.

What you can do now

Take Prozac exactly as prescribed and do not stop it suddenly or change the dose without medical advice. Keep a brief record of when the appetite change began, how much you are managing to eat and drink, and whether nausea or other symptoms occur.

Try small, frequent meals rather than waiting to feel hungry. Choose easy-to-eat foods with energy and protein, and sip fluids regularly. If nausea is present, bland foods and taking the medicine in the way your prescriber advised may help. Contact the prescriber if eating remains difficult, your weight is falling, or side effects interfere with daily life.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help if appetite loss comes with repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or thoughts of self-harm. These symptoms need prompt assessment rather than medication changes at home.

Arrange a clinician review soon if the symptom lasts, steadily worsens, or is accompanied by ongoing fever, persistent diarrhoea, black stools, or noticeable unintentional weight loss. Bring your medicine list and appetite notes so the assessment can separate a Prozac side effect from another illness.

Questions for your doctor or pharmacist

Ask whether the timing fits a Prozac side effect, whether another medicine could be contributing, and how long an adjustment period is reasonable. You can also ask how to protect nutrition, whether your dose or dosing time should change, and which symptoms would require urgent help.

Questions people ask

Should you stop Prozac if you lose your appetite?

No. Speak with the prescriber before stopping or changing Prozac, because sudden changes can cause problems and appetite loss may have another cause.

How can you eat when Prozac reduces your appetite?

Try small frequent meals, easy-to-eat foods, and regular sips of fluid. Seek a review if eating or drinking remains difficult or weight is falling.

Could something other than Prozac be causing poor appetite?

Yes. Depression, infections, stomach conditions, and other medicines can affect appetite, so persistent symptoms deserve an assessment.
