Short answer

Loss of appetite with nausea, fatigue and sweating can reflect an infection, stomach irritation, medication effect or another illness that needs assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this combination can mean

These symptoms often occur together when the body is responding to illness. Viral illnesses such as influenza or COVID-19 may reduce appetite and bring tiredness, nausea or sweating. Gastroenteritis can add vomiting or diarrhoea, while gastritis or a peptic ulcer may cause upper-abdominal discomfort, nausea or early fullness. Less common causes include liver, pancreas, hormone or mental-health problems. The symptoms alone cannot identify one diagnosis.

Notice when the symptoms began, whether sweating occurs with fever, and whether you can keep fluids down. Record abdominal pain, bowel changes, urine colour, weight change and any new medicine or supplement.

What you can do now

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Choose plain, nourishing foods in modest portions when tolerated, such as soup, yoghurt, rice or toast. Rest, avoid alcohol, and avoid forcing a large meal. Follow medicine instructions and do not stop a prescribed treatment without advice.

Arrange a primary-care assessment if the symptoms persist, recur, or interfere with eating and drinking. A clinician can examine you and decide whether tests are needed.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, chest pain, trouble breathing, blood in vomit or stool, black stools, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and marked dizziness. Prompt assessment is also sensible with yellow skin or eyes, persistent high fever, repeated vomiting, or unexplained ongoing weight loss.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which causes fit your symptom pattern, whether dehydration or an infection is suspected, which medicines may worsen nausea, and what warning signs should prompt urgent review. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, recent illnesses and your symptom timeline.

Questions people ask

Can these symptoms be caused by an infection?

Yes. Influenza, COVID-19 and stomach infections can reduce appetite and cause nausea, fatigue or sweating, but symptoms need context and examination when they persist.

When is loss of appetite more concerning?

It is more concerning when you cannot keep fluids down, become dehydrated, develop severe pain or bleeding, or have ongoing unexplained weight loss.
