Loss of appetite before labor

As pregnancy advances, the uterus can press on the stomach, making a full meal uncomfortable. Heartburn, nausea, constipation, worry, and poor sleep may have the same effect. Some people notice appetite changes around the time other labor signs appear, but reduced appetite alone does not establish labor. Regular tightening that becomes stronger, a show, waters breaking, or pelvic pressure are more useful details to report to your maternity team. Fever, diarrhea, vomiting, or body aches may instead suggest gastroenteritis or influenza.

Eat small portions when you feel able, choosing nourishing foods that are familiar and easy to digest. Keep a drink nearby and take frequent sips. Avoid forcing a large meal if it worsens reflux. Record the timing of contractions, any fluid loss, and your baby's usual movement pattern. Keep your maternity unit's contact details accessible and follow the birth-plan instructions you were given.

Call your maternity unit if your waters break, contractions become regular and painful, you have vaginal bleeding, or your baby's movements are reduced or different. Seek urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, faintness, confusion, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Appetite loss that lasts or is accompanied by fever, persistent vomiting, or severe headache also deserves prompt assessment.
