Loose Skin Near the Anus: What to Know

The area can develop a soft fold after previous swelling, an anal fissure, haemorrhoids, pregnancy, or changes in body weight. Friction, moisture, and frequent wiping may make the fold itchy or sore. Appearance alone cannot distinguish a harmless fold from an inflamed haemorrhoid, wart, abscess, or another growth.

Do not cut, tie off, or apply strong cosmetic products to the tissue. A clinician can inspect the skin and, when needed, the anal canal while protecting privacy.

Keep the area gently clean with lukewarm water, pat it dry, and choose breathable underwear. Avoid vigorous scrubbing and fragranced wipes. Treat constipation with fluids, fibre, and regular movement if those measures suit you; straining can worsen swelling. If the fold catches, rubs, or interferes with hygiene, a dermatologist or colorectal clinician can discuss whether removal is appropriate.

Arrange prompt medical care for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, fever, pus, a rapidly enlarging lump, or dark discolouration. Book an examination for tissue that persists, changes, ulcerates, or is associated with ongoing itching or discharge. These warning signs call for assessment because they may reflect inflammation or another anal condition, not simply loose skin.

Ask whether the tissue is a skin tag, haemorrhoid, scar, wart, or another lesion; whether an internal examination is needed; and which hygiene measures are safest. If removal is discussed, ask about healing, wound care, recurrence, and how bowel movements may feel during recovery.
