Loose skin around the stomach: what to know

Short answer
Loose skin around the stomach commonly follows stretching or changes in body volume, and a painful bulge or sudden swelling needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why abdominal skin may look loose
Skin can remain stretched after pregnancy, weight loss, or long periods of expansion. Age, genetics, and reduced elasticity also influence whether the abdomen looks folded, crepey, or soft. Stretch marks may appear alongside loose skin but are a separate change in the deeper skin layers.
Loose skin is different from abdominal fat and from a hernia. A bulge that becomes more obvious with coughing or straining, pain around a navel or scar, vomiting, or inability to pass stool needs clinical attention rather than cosmetic treatment.
Available next steps
Keep the skin comfortable with gentle cleansing and moisturiser, protect exposed areas from sun, and avoid crash dieting or rapid weight cycling. Strength training can improve muscle tone beneath the skin, but it does not remove excess skin itself.
If the fold causes rubbing, rash, or distress, a clinician can assess whether skin tightening, body-contouring surgery, or another approach fits. Energy-based treatments may suit selected mild laxity; larger amounts of excess skin may require a surgical discussion. Timing matters after pregnancy or major weight change, so share your health plans with the clinician.
When to seek care
Seek medical advice for a new or enlarging abdominal bulge, persistent pain, skin breakdown, recurrent rash, fever, or swelling that does not settle. Get urgent help for severe pain, vomiting, a firm tender bulge, or skin that becomes markedly discoloured. Stable loose skin without these features can be addressed at a routine appointment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the concern is excess skin, fat, muscle separation, or a hernia; whether your skin fold needs treatment for friction; which options fit your plans; and how recovery could affect exercise and daily activities.

Questions people ask
Will abdominal exercise remove loose skin?
Exercise can strengthen the abdominal muscles and support function, but it does not reliably remove excess skin.
Can loose stomach skin cause a rash?
A skin fold can trap moisture and friction, which may contribute to irritation; recurring or broken skin should be examined.
