Loose Skin Around the Anus: What to Know

Perianal skin can remain stretched after inflammation, a thrombosed haemorrhoid, childbirth, or repeated irritation. A skin tag is usually soft and flesh-coloured, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Anal fissures, haemorrhoids, infection, and other lesions can produce nearby symptoms, so avoid assuming every lump is a tag.

Rinse gently with water, pat dry, avoid fragranced products, and prevent constipation with fluids and fibre if suitable for you. Do not cut, tie off, burn, or apply wart treatments to the area. A doctor can inspect the skin and discuss removal only if the tag causes hygiene problems, repeated irritation, or discomfort. Removal may leave a wound and can have risks.

Arrange medical review for persistent bleeding, a painful lump, pus, fever, a non-healing sore, altered bowel control, or a lesion that changes quickly. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pain with swelling, or inability to pass stool or urine. Anal symptoms deserve a direct examination rather than self-treatment.

Ask what the tissue is, whether constipation or haemorrhoids are contributing, whether removal is useful, how the wound would be cared for, and which symptoms should trigger follow-up.
