What should you know about looks like heat rash but isn’t?

Heat rash develops when blocked sweat ducts cause small itchy or prickly spots, often where heat and friction collect. Similar-looking bumps or redness can also occur with contact dermatitis, eczema, folliculitis, insect reactions, medication reactions, or a viral illness. The location, itch or pain, scale, blisters, timing, and recent exposures help separate these possibilities. A rash appearance alone cannot identify its cause.

If the eruption persists after cooling and reducing friction, spreads, or keeps returning, arrange an examination. A clinician may ask about soaps, fabrics, products, exercise, travel, illness, and medicines, then inspect the skin closely.

Keep the area cool and dry, wear loose breathable clothing, and pause new fragranced products. Wash gently without scrubbing or popping bumps. A bland moisturiser may help when the skin barrier is dry, but avoid applying thick occlusive products to a sweaty eruption. Do not start a steroid cream on an undiagnosed rash if infection is possible; treatment depends on the cause and body site. Photograph changes so the clinician can compare them.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash. Arrange prompt care for fever, marked pain, pus, skin peeling, purple spots that do not fade with pressure, eye or mouth involvement, or a rash in a very young or medically vulnerable person. Worsening redness and warmth can signal infection and should be assessed.

Ask which features point toward heat rash versus dermatitis or infection, whether you should use an emollient, and whether a topical corticosteroid is suitable for the location. Ask how long to monitor it and which change requires earlier review.
