Long-term hiccups

Short answer
Long-term hiccups can disrupt eating, sleep, and breathing, and may be linked to reflux, stomach irritation, medicines, or another condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Body movement
- Involuntary diaphragm spasm
- Possible digestive links
- Acid reflux or gastritis
Why hiccups may persist
A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm followed by sudden closure of the voice box. Brief episodes are common, but persistent or frequently recurring hiccups can irritate the diaphragm or the nerves that control it. Acid reflux and gastritis may contribute by irritating the upper digestive tract. Other possibilities include a medicine effect, chest or abdominal irritation, metabolic disturbance, or a neurological problem.
The effect on daily life matters: repeated hiccups can make swallowing uncomfortable, interrupt sleep, cause exhaustion, and make it harder to keep food or fluids down. The cause cannot be identified from the hiccup sound alone.
What may help
Note when hiccups begin, how long they last, what you ate or drank, and whether lying down or reflux symptoms are involved. Eat slowly, avoid large meals, and stay upright after eating if reflux seems relevant. Review new medicines with a clinician rather than stopping them yourself. If symptoms persist, a doctor may look for digestive, chest, medication-related, or neurological causes and may prescribe treatment such as acid reflux medication when appropriate.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review for hiccups that continue, repeatedly interrupt sleep, or make eating and drinking difficult. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, confusion, weakness on one side, repeated vomiting, or inability to swallow fluids. These features may point to a problem needing prompt assessment rather than simple diaphragm irritation.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether reflux, gastritis, a medicine, or another condition could explain the pattern. Discuss whether you need an examination or tests, which treatments are suitable, and what to do if hiccups prevent sleep, food, or fluids.

Questions people ask
Can acid reflux cause long-term hiccups?
Reflux can irritate the upper digestive tract and may contribute, but persistent hiccups need assessment for other causes too.
Should persistent hiccups be treated at home?
Simple measures may help briefly, but ongoing hiccups that affect sleep, eating, or drinking should be reviewed by a clinician.
