What should you know about long pulse diode laser?

The device sends repeated pulses of light into the skin. Pigment in the hair absorbs part of that energy, which heats the follicle and can reduce its ability to produce hair. The handpiece, cooling method, pulse duration, and energy level are selected according to skin tone, hair colour, hair thickness, and body site. Hair grows in cycles, so treated follicles are not all equally responsive at one visit.

Temporary warmth, redness, or swelling around follicles may follow treatment. Darker or recently tanned skin needs particularly careful assessment because excess heat can irritate skin or alter its colour.

Tell the clinician about tanning, skin conditions, medicines that increase light sensitivity, and any tendency to develop dark marks. Follow their instructions about shaving and avoid plucking hairs if the follicle is the intended target. Afterward, use gentle skin care, protect the area from strong sun, and avoid rubbing or heat until the skin settles. Discuss expected sessions and whether another approach is more suitable for light, grey, or red hair.

Contact the provider if blistering, marked swelling, severe pain, crusting, or a new light or dark patch develops. Urgent medical advice is appropriate for rapidly worsening pain, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or signs of infection. Do not continue treatment over an unexplained rash or open skin until it has been assessed.
