Living with acid reflux

Short answer
Living with acid reflux involves noticing meal and posture triggers, protecting sleep, using treatment correctly, and recognising warning symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Meals, bending, and lying down
- Night measure
- Stay upright after eating and consider bed elevation
What it means
Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move back towards the food pipe, causing burning, sour fluid, throat irritation, or a cough. Symptoms may be worse after a large meal, when bending, or when lying down. Hiatus Hernia and Obesity can contribute, but symptoms have several possible causes.
Chest discomfort should not automatically be attributed to reflux. A clinician may consider heart, lung, stomach, and food-pipe causes, especially when the pattern changes.
What you can do
Notice whether late meals, alcohol, coffee, chocolate, spicy food, or fatty meals bring symptoms on, then adjust the triggers that clearly affect you. Choose smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and raise the head end of the bed if night symptoms occur. Avoid tight clothing around the abdomen and seek support with smoking cessation if relevant.
Use antacids or prescribed acid-reducing treatment exactly as directed, and tell a clinician about medicines that may irritate the stomach. Keep a record of burning, regurgitation, Cough, and response to treatment. Ongoing symptoms can be associated with Chronic Cough.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for severe or persistent Chest Tightness, breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. Arrange prompt review for difficulty swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or new symptoms that do not settle. Abdominal Pain that is severe or worsening also needs assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Could another condition be causing these symptoms? Which foods or medicines should I review? How long should I use my treatment? Do I need assessment for night symptoms, swallowing problems, or persistent cough?
